Not signing Napoli midfielder is Maldini’s biggest regret

AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini deeply regrets not signing the new Napoli star reports L’Equipe.

AC Milan have done a great business on the transfer market recently. In the last two years the Rossoneri have strengthened their squad a  lot by focusing on players suitable for their cause and project. But there is no shortage of regrets. For example, the names of Sven Botman and Renato Sanches. The Lille duo was very close but ultimately moved elsewhere.

However, Paolo Maldini’s biggest regret is another player. According to L’Equipe, the AC Milan technical director really regrets not signing Cameroon international Frank Zambo Anguissa who has become one of the best players in Serie A with Napoli.

The French newspaper reveals that Maldini became interested in the 26-eyar-old midfielder when he was still owned by Fulham, therefore in the summer of 2021. AC Milan had a couple of meetings with the Fulham but ultimately made no formal bid for Anguissa.

Frank Anguissa joined Napoli on loan that season. After an impressive year in Serie A, Napoli had no doubts about making Anguissa’s transfer permanent paying almost €16 million to Fulham. This season Anguissa has taken his game to another level contributing much more in attack.

He has 3 goals and 5 assists to his name in 11 appearances. Excellent numbers for a player whose primary duty is to break the opposition. A talented midfielder with predominant athletic abilities would have been ideal for the AC Milan’s play style especially considering the departure of Franck Kessie.

On the other hand AC Milan switched their focus to Tiemoue Bakayoko. The Rossoneri signed the French midfielder on loan with a potential obligation to buy for €20 million if certain conditions are met. Bakayoko’s second spell at Milan proved a total disaster and he hasn’t played a single minute this season.
